Music feeds the soul and lifts the spirit of our students. Our comprehensive, performance-based music program transforms the lives of our students.

The experience of participating in a chorus, along with the skills developed in music theory, piano and voice classes, fosters the discipline, perseverance and poise critical to becoming successful men.

​

The Newark Boys Chorus School music program begins with the Apprentice Chorus program for fourth and fifth graders. The students step up to the Concert Chorus for sixth through eighth grades. The choruses join together each year to present the holiday concert in December and Spring concert in early June.

​

With a diversified repertoire that includes traditional classical music, spirituals, folk music and jazz, the choruses perform at more than 40 events annually for an audience totaling 30,000.

 

APPRENTICE CHORUS

​

Participation in the Apprentice Chorus begins the vocal and performance training of our fourth and fifth grade students. The students raise their voices in celebration of our community and collaborate with schools throughout New Jersey to provide workshops. An annual highlight for the Apprentice Chorus is singing at the graduation ceremony for the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

CONCERT CHORUS

The Concert Chorus performs throughout the U.S. and internationally. Our students have performed in world-renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, in addition to the White House and cathedrals throughout Europe. Not only does the Concert Chorus perform for entertainment, the boys also lend their voices to celebrate community events and raise awareness of important issues like cancer, AIDS and human rights.

TRIENNIAL TOUR: GLOBAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE

​

Every three years, the Newark Boys Chorus School Concert Chorus embarks on a tour and global learning experience. Each student has the opportunity to be a part of one tour in his tenure with the chorus.

​

Our curriculum integrates instructional modules that prepare students with knowledge of the culture, history, language and environment of the tour locations. The tour transforms the lives of our students. For many, this is their first opportunity to perform and experience life outside our region and be immersed in a different culture.

​

"It changed my life", exclaimed one Newark Boys Chorus School alumnus about the triennial tour. Before his trip, he had only traveled across Newark by bus. By the time he returned home, he had flown in planes, explored four European cities and sung in one dozen concerts.
