You Can Transform a Child's Life
"Sustain the Note"
November 7, 2023
To the Donors and Supporters of the Newark Boys Chorus School,
In June 2023, the Board of Trustees of the Newark Boys Chorus School made a pivotal decision regarding the school's future. We voted to reopen for the 2023/2024 school year, contingent upon securing $500,000.00 in cash or pledges by October 31, 2023. This funding was crucial to cover salaries, rents, and other operational expenses.
Despite our best and exhaustive efforts to reach this financial goal, regrettably, we were unable to do so. Consequently, on October 15, the Board decided to temporarily cease the school's operations. We understand that this news may be distressing, but our financial situation has left us with no viable alternative.
The Board opted for the October 31, 2023, closure date in response to the families' requests. This decision would allow their children to attend the school until October 31st, should they need to enroll in another institution.
All of the students have been placed in area schools, including, St. Benedicts, Phillips Academy, and the Newark Public School system. Each of them has started in their new schools.
Since 1969, the Newark Boys Chorus School has been dedicated to providing tuition-free education to young men in grades 3 through 8. Our institution relies solely on donations, grants, and fundraising activities, including the Rainbow Gala.
This decision by the Board is a direct response to the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic downturn. Both these factors have significantly impacted our enrollment and fundraising efforts.
We remain hopeful that this closure will be temporary. The Newark Boys Chorus School Board, along with its Development Committee and the Head of School, is committed to actively seeking funding. During this operational pause, we will dedicate our efforts to securing the resources required to continue the remarkable legacy and mission of the Newark Boys Chorus School.
As always, we thank you for your loyal support of our school and look forward to a continued relationship as we work to continue the mission and legacy of NBCS stronger than ever.
With our sincere appreciation and gratitude for your many years of continued support!
Robert Wright
