Schools That Can National Forum

May 2019. NBCS participated in the 14th Annual gathering of educational leaders from Schools That Can national network of cross-sector schools. Schools and educational partners convened at Rutgers University-- Newark campus to engage in critical conversations about the intersection of culturally relevant pedagogy and real-world learning.

A select group from the African drums flex course performed a few selections during the opening session, Advancing Culturally Real-World Learning. Students also showcased their acting talents in a series of video skits centered around issues related to culturally relevant teaching and real-world learning.

“It was an amazing opportunity to showcase our school at a National Forum. I was extremely excited and nervous to make my acting debut. Our videos were well received and I heard that they were even discussing them during the break out sessions.”

Not only were the students celebrated during the first day of the forum. The Social Studies teacher Andrew Binger also presented a workshop titled, “Helping Black Boys Achieve: Breaking Social-Emotional Barriers Through Culturally Relevant Mentorship".

“Far too often young black men are punished and suspended, driving them further away from school and learning, and closer to destructive activity. We have to rethink the models in place at our schools,” stated Andrew Binger. “I believe engaging our students through mentorship can help them navigate these challenging situations and create a sense of community within our school.”

The second day of the forum concluded with school study tour visit to NBCS from a group of teachers and administrators to learn about best practices and to watch a live rehearsal from the Concert Chorus directed by Donald Morris. During a Q & A session, the participants met with the Academic Director and students to learn more about the school. They were amazed to learn about the character education program, the fact that every students gets a chance to travel abroad, and the rigorous academic and music program. One of the visitors was even quoted saying, “I am amazed to see the discipline and high level of focus that these young men have as you approach your music and your academic work. I felt like I was watching a professional choir perform. Keep up the good work.”
