August 2018. For the second summer in a row local students under the direction of Malcolm Rolling from Yendor have created a giant indoor mural displaying the artistic nature of the Newark Boys Chorus School. “It’s a five week program with the first two weeks spent designing, then it’s prepping and painting. All 12 of our student volunteer artists get to work on the mural. Finally, they decide on a name for the project,” Rolling stated as he described the project. So far the working title of this year’s project is “The Pillars of NBCS.”
Benjamin Fulton, a 12th grader at Arts High likes “learning about the history of art” and “cooperating and creating with other people.” Sky Frias, an Arts High 10th grader, enjoys “learning how to make a mural” as she wants to become a graphic designer when she finishes school. Mural artist and Arts High student, Anika Anthony, has learned a great deal about the technical aspects of mural construction. She, too, wants a career in the graphic arts. Finally, Anderson Rodriquez, a NBCS graduate and an 11th grader at Arts High likes the mural as it shows the different aspects of student life at the school. He has enjoyed the project as it has taught him, “how to create a good design and ‘mount’ it on the wall.” Rodriquez wants to be a professional singer when he finishes school.
