Graduation 2018

Success!!

June 2018. After four years at the Newark Boys Chorus School it was time for the Class of 2018 to perform the traditional South African Folk Song, Remember Me Wherever You Go for the last time. With over 125 performances before over 100,000 audience members and an extraordinary commitment to academic success the Class of 2018 moves on . . . with distinction.

Class valedictorian, Hannel Hiraldo spoke to the underclassmen at NBCS about how hard work and dedication lead to success.

He related his journey at Newark Boys Chorus School to two tall buildings that he saw during the international tour to Canada in 6th grade. As he watched in amazement at the height and architectural design of the buildings, he knew that anything could be possible with a plan, hard work, and determination. Hannel will be attending Science Park High School next year.

In Gavin Rembert’s reflections about his years at NBCS he gave credit to his father and the school for their pivotal roles in helping him develop a focus on academics and athletics. He has become an excellent student and will attend Don Bosco Preparatory High School in Ramsey next year where he will play football and study hard to prepare for college.

Focusing on a version of the old saying, “curiosity did not kill the cat,” Celia King, Chief Executive Officer of Leadership Newark urged the graduates to remain intellectually curious throughout school and during life. “This should be your driving force as you experience the world and your future,” concluded King.

The NBCS annual Humanitarian Award presented on behalf of Theresa Monaco, former NBCS teacher went to Che Darden. Che is the Class of 2018 Salutatorian and will attend Church Farm School in Pennsylvania next year.

Following the graduation ceremonies the Class of 2018 returned to the school for a graduation reception provided by parents and friends of the school. The parents handed out certificates of appreciation to their sons’ teachers and administrators as a fitting conclusion to the 2017-2018 school year.

“It’s been a great year for everyone at NBCS,” concluded Sakiyyah Darden, Che’s mother.
